After installing a four-wheel drive MSR 500/3 at Assetti, a supercar performance specialist in vehicle tuning, paint protection film and aftermarket exhaust and tuning parts, MAHA UK’s dynamometer specialist, Louis Tunmore, travelled back up to Cheshire to conduct a day’s training with the team.

Cambridgeshire, 3rd May 2022 After a morning’s work, Louis was pulled aside to ask how the session had panned out – thankfully, he replied: “Exactly as expected!”

He added: “We produced some textbook tests, and the team picked it up really well. As always, there are elements during the training where we either find shortcomings in the cell design or synchronicity issues with the existing equipment – small, normal teething problems that can be easily overcome.”

After calibrating and testing Louis’s own vehicle – which accompanies him up-and-down the UK, so was a straightforward step – a Volkswagen Golf R, a brand-new car to him, was the next one to roll onto the dynamometer, followed by increasingly interesting front-wheel drive, real-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles.

During training, additional equipment requirements were assessed and recommendations made for tooling to facilitate datalogging and to open access to ‘Dyno Mode’ on some of the less cooperative vehicles.

Loud training environment – does that make training tricky?

The training arena is a noisy, busy place with lots of instructions to follow; however, with more than 20 years’ experience, Louis used this know-how to guide the team through the necessary steps and make it easy-to-follow.

It’s important he demonstrates each phase, before asking the people who will be working with the prestigious vehicles to take the reins, as maximising the performance out of the equipment can be challenging if not understood.

Louis said: “Training is primarily centred around working safely; it’s vital the car is loaded onto the dyno and restrained accurately and tightly, whilst not damaging suspension or bodywork components. I start gently with a load simulation, which imposes a load on the car, so the car is trying to move and put power down. At that point, we monitor and analyse what each wheel is trying to do, where the car is trying to move to and how to deal with that.

“From then on, it’s navigating the menus, conducting power tests, interpreting the results and how to deal with any issues. If I see an inconsistency on the top end, we analyse why, we deal with that before proceeding, I go beyond the realms of dyno training – I’m testing cars and scrutinising results – and that takes experience and lots of practice!”
